Innovative product changes the way users securely access computer networks, significantly
reducing data security risks
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Nexicon, (Pink Sheets: NXCN) a
leading supplier of anti-piracy and network security solutions is pleased to announce the release
of NexiONE (TM). This landmark product allows users to access their remote computer networks
with unprecedented security from any Internet-ready PC by using a USB thumb drive. Similar
solutions fall short of NexiONE by allowing a malicious attack on a computer through holes in its
operating system. NexiONE mitigates this risk by connecting to the remote network from its own,
proprietary UNIX-based operating system.
When a user inserts the NexiONE USB thumb drive into a computer with online connectivity,
NexiONE's operating system automatically connects to the Internet and opens a secure "tunnel"
back to the user's network. From here, the user can securely access software applications or files
stored on the remote network. It is no longer necessary for a workforce to travel with a portable
computer and hard drive to access sensitive remote data or applications.
"NexiONE is truly a breakthrough in mobile technology and one that we believe can revolutionize
the way today's mobile workforce uses portable technology," said Richard Urrea, Nexicon CEO.
During state or national emergencies, it is common for an agency to provide computers to
government workers who arrive to provide assistance. Representing dozens of various
government organizations, each user requires a secure connection to their unique network
infrastructure. With NexiONE as part of the user's toolset, the risk of data falling into unauthorized
hands is greatly reduced since there are no hard drives leaving the agency's four walls and
sensitive data remains on the network when accessed remotely.
NexiONE is based upon a software stack that resides on a USB thumb drive. Included on the
thumb drive is a live operating system which either runs under Windows or as a fully bootable
operating system from BIOS. An advanced encryption algorithm and firewall are also included. A
user who requires access to applications or data on a remote network simply inserts the thumb
drive into the USB port of any PC with Internet connectivity, and after entering their user name
and password, is automatically brought to their destination network. The connection is completely
secure, and after the user removes the thumb stick, there remains no evidence of the user ever
having been on the machine. No specific action is required from the user to make this happen
beyond inserting the thumb drive and entering their credentials when prompted.
"We developed this solution by request of the United States Department of Defense," said Urrea.
"The first pilot test was successful, and larger rollouts are now planned for the very near future."
Nexicon is partnering with a government contractor to market, sell and distribute NexiONE.
Current customers of this contractor have indicated their intent to purchase and deploy the
solution to its user base.
The applicability for the private sector is prevalent as well. NexiONE v1.4, scheduled for release
in the first quarter of 2008, will include functionality to support commercial customers. The $300 -
$500 price point per unit will be competitive to current methods used to protect data, and the risk
of losses from security breaches is greatly reduced.
According to technology research giant International Data Corporation (IDC), the workforce of
mobile workers will soar to 878 million by 2009, up 18% from the 744 million corporate
globetrotters in 2006. "We can foresee the NexiONE product to be as important to a mobile
workforce as their cell phones," stated Urrea.
In a 2006 study conducted by anti-piracy research group Ponemon Institute of 31 organizations
that lost confidential customer information by data security breach, it was determined:
-- The average cost per breach was $4.8MM, and ranged from $226k to $22MM
-- Over 90% of all breaches were in digital form -- lost laptops,
electronic backups, and hacked and attacked systems
-- 60% of the affected customers terminated or considered terminating
their relationships with offending companies
"A company that utilizes NexiONE for remote network access eliminates the need for their
employees to travel with a hard drive," says Tommy Stiansen, Nexicon CTO. "Information
security is one of the most pressing concerns facing today's CIO's and IT leaders, and NexiONE
can help ensure a company's intellectual property and confidential data remains where it belongs,
on a secured network."
Nexicon is obtaining the necessary patents to protect the NexiONE product.
"The announcement of NexiONE clearly demonstrates Nexicon's ability to deliver substantial
value to the public and private sector," said Stiansen. "Our engineering team's knowledge of antipiracy
technology as well as how and why piracy occurs was the key contributor to designing the
NexiONE solution."
