Solutions for Video Game Piracy Just Around the Corner

Tommy Stiansen

Gaming piracy is become quite popular these days, and despite the industry’s best efforts, nothing is working. In the first half of 2009, we will launch a campaign towards gaming industry content owners of all sizes, to help combat piracy in an efficient way by deploying not only anti-piracy methods and technology, but also by integrating important business rules and counter-measures throughout their organizations. This comprehensive and holistic approach will curb current digital piracy while preventing future digital piracy.  This effort will help not only help the gaming content owners collaborate and educate the end users about the negative impacts of piracy, but build a stronger corporate image of the gaming companies towards other industries who are suffering.

We have followed the digital piracy in the gaming industry closely for the past 3-4 years, and have witnessed explosive growth in the volumes of files shared and downloaded online.  We are struck by the relative inaction from the gaming content owners, and recognize that it is directly related to the limited options currently available. There are a handful of vendors attempting to help, but based on the volumes crossing through MARC each day, it does not appear that much help is being provided. The Electronic Arts‘ and Activision’s of the world can somewhat insulate themselves from digital piracy, but the smaller companies are negatively impacted in a far greater way.

Nexicon’s solutions will initially be best suited and aimed to the smaller to medium-sized gaming content owners (measured by sales volume) during our launch in the early part of 2009. Tailored solutions for the larger content owners will be launched during Q2-Q3 2009, and will compete directly with the current solutions that are in place that are attempting to help our future clients.

The approach and solution Nexicon will offer spans entire business processes and must be implemented throughout multiple functional areas in a gaming content owner’s organization.  Best practices supported by our next-generation technology provide value far beyond the cost to our future clients, as prevention of digital piracy will be a focus area.

Fighting piracy after piracy has already occured, and multiplying exponentially, is akin to fighthing one of the famous wildfires in Los Angeles with a squirt gun during the Santa Ana winds. So stay tuned for our solution; we will serve and implement the first scenario as a pilot and give the winning ticket to the first gaming content owner that complies with our planned implementation approach.
